Signing up for a gym membership can be costly. Who wants to work out in front of all those people anyway? If you’re nodding your head right now, home fitness is for you. The ability to work out in the comfort of your own home is convenient and will cost a third of the price. But where to start? Training with weights will give you the workout you need and strengthen your body at the same time.
When starting out as a newbie at weight training, you should learn exactly what you will get out of your exercise. Weight training allows you to gain strength and endurance. It can also allow you to tone your body and create lean muscle so you’ll actually be able to carry that heavy bag of groceries much easier. If you’re a runner, you can benefit tremendously from free weights because it will build up your endurance, allowing you to run faster and longer.
The next step is to pick out your weights. You want to start off small. The last thing you want to do is overdo it and hurt yourself. It’s a good idea to buy different dumbbells at varying weights. A set of 5 pound, 10 pound and 15 pound weights is a good place to start. This way you will be able to challenge yourself as you grow stronger. To gauge what the perfect weight would be to start with is do some reps. Pick the smallest of the weights and do a rep of 10. If you feel tired and you can’t lift anymore than that set is too heavy. If you feel like you could do more after 10, then those are just right.
Once you have found your perfect free weights, you should choose how many reps you’re going to do. A rep is how many times you do a certain exercise. Remember this isn’t a competition. Just do what you feel comfortable with without pushing yourself too hard. For most beginners, 10-12 reps each arm is a great place to start. However if this is too much for you, take it down to 6-8 reps. Once you begin strengthening your muscles, you can work your way up.
The choice to start a healthy workout plan is a good one no matter what. Working out from home can boost motivation, since you don’t have to go anywhere. So shut the blinds, blast some music and get to work on a healthier, happier you.
